花瓶としては珍しい、フラットなデザイン。トロンプルイユのように人物の顔が描かれたINI CERAMIQUEの作品を初めてみた時、きっと家に迎え入れたら日常にアートとユーモアをもたらしてくれ、少し特別な気分になれるだろうな、と思いました。
韓国にルーツを持ち、フランスの芸術大学でファインアートを学んだというInheeさんによるこの INI CERAMIQUEは、フランス・ブザンソンに拠点を構え制作を行なっています。2月某日、4月に予定されているmoor galleryでのイベントにむけて制作を行っている最中の彼女のアトリエを訪れました。
パリから南東へ高速電車に乗って約２時間。山と森に包まれた風景と澄んだ空気、パリとは全く異なる開放感のある場所に、アトリエが佇んでいました。パートナーのMathieuさんと2人で少しずつ改装しているというこのアトリエはまだまだ途中段階だそうですが、二人の美意識が詰まった、とても心地の良い空間です。もともとパリで制作していたというInheeさんですが、この自然と広い環境は彼女のクリエイションへのモチベーションを高めているといいます。
大きな窓からたくさん光が差し込み、気持ちの良いアトリエにて制作の工程を見せていただきながら、Inheeさんにお話を伺いました。
When I first saw the work of INI CERAMIQUE flat shaped featuring faces of people like trompe-l'œil on vases, I thought it would surely bring art and humor into my daily life and make me feel a bit special if welcomed into the home.
Founded by Inhee, who has roots in Korea and studied fine arts at the Beaux Arts school of Montpellier,INI CERAMIQUE is now based in Besançon, France. On a certain day in February, I visited her studio while she was in the midst of preparing for an event scheduled for April at the moor gallery.
About a two-hour ride southeast from Paris on a high-speed train, nestled in landscapes of mountains, forests, and crisp air, the studio stood in a place with a completely different sense of openness from Paris. Although still in the midst of renovation with her partner Mathieu, the studio is a very comfortable space filled with the aesthetic sensibilities of the two. Inhee, who originally worked in Paris, says that this natural and spacious environment enhances her motivation for creation.
With plenty of light pouring in through large windows, I had the opportunity to see the process of her work in the pleasant studio and hear from Inhee.
−フラットな造形の花瓶はユニークで印象的です。どのように生まれたのでしょうか？
実は、これは偶然に生まれたものなのです。
私は美術学校でファインアートを学んだのですが、コロナ禍でのステイホーム時期に、パリの自宅で趣味として陶芸をスタートさせました。最初は陶芸の技術もなくろくろも持っていなかったので、フラットな作品にせざるを得ませんでした。でも結果としてそれが現在のスタイルの原点となったんですね。最初のコレクションは、描画のないミニマルなスタイルでした。友人のために制作していたものをそのうちオンラインサイトで販売するようになり、次第に人気を得るようになっていきました。もともと陶芸は学んでいませんでしたが、フランスの美術大学で学んだ時にたくさんの素晴らしいアーティストの作品を見て刺激を受けたことで、自分の視界が開けたように感じます。クリエイティブで自由であることの価値に気がつくことができました。
–スタジオにある作品を見て、あなたはこのほかにもいろいろな表現方法を持っているということに驚きました。どのような想いで制作されているのですか？
頭の中にはもっともっとたくさんのアイデアが浮かんでいるのですが、ビジネスとして考えた時には、何をつくるか絞らなければいけないということが難しいところです。アート作品をつくるということも選択することができますが、私は今、それよりも日常でより多くの方に使ってもらえることが喜びで、誰もが手に取ることができるものをつくることに価値を感じています。数年後は違うことをしているかもしれませんが、アイデンティティを保ちながらどのようなスタイルを築いていくのか、今も常々アップデートしているところです。
−パリから離れて現在の場所にアトリエを構えたきっかけは？
働くためだけではなく、自然がすぐそばにある場所に住みたかったということが大きいです。パリに住んでいた時もほぼ毎日ブローニュの森を散歩していて、自然はいつも私に良い影響を与えてくれると感じています。また陶芸を行うには土やストックなど広いスペースが必要で、パリで制作に没頭するのは難しいことだと感じました。最初にブルゴーニュで家を借りた時に犬を飼ったこともあり（現在２歳になるボルゾイ犬のSane）、その後、色々なご縁がつながり現在の場所に出会いました。
−環境、地域、ライフスタイルはあなたの作品に影響を与えますか？
自然が直接的なインスピレーションを作品に与えるわけではありませんが、良い環境が自身のクリエイションへのモチベーションになっているのは確かで、人生をより豊かなものにしていると感じます。毎週近くの森へハイキングに行ったり、時々、大きな窓から馬が噴水の水を飲みにくる姿を見ることもあるんです。自然のエネルギーや現在の環境が、副産物として作品に影響を与えていることはあるかもしれませんね。
−今後どのような創作活動をしていきたいですか？
5年後のことはまだわかりませんが… お皿のバリエーションを発展させていきたいと思っています。現在プロトタイプに取り組んでいます。（アイデアがたくさん描かれたスケッチブックを見せていただきながら）散歩している時に見つけたものを写真に撮ったりして、自身の中で発展させていきます。新しいプロダクトのプロジェクトも進行していますが、INIとして発展させるべきか、ほかのアプローチとして発展させるのかをまだ検討しています。
- The unique and impressive flat vases caught my attention. How did they come about?
Actually, it was something that happened by chance. I studied fine arts at the Beaux-Arts school of Montpellier, but during the stay-at-home period of the pandemic, I started pottery as my pleasure at my home in Paris. At first, I didn't have any pottery skills or even a potter's wheel, so I had to make flat pieces. But as a result, it became one of the origins of my current style. The first collection was minimalistic with no drawings. I started selling them online after making them for my friends, and gradually they became popular. Although I didn't originally study pottery, seeing the works of many wonderful artists during my time in France broadened my perspective. I realized the value of being creative and free.
- I was surprised to see your variety of expression in the pieces in your studio. What drives your creation?
There are many more ideas in my mind, but when considering it as a business, it's difficult to decide what to create. I can choose to create art pieces, but I find joy in creating things that more people can use in their daily lives, things that anyone can pick up. I might be doing something different in a few years, but I'm constantly updating what style to build while keeping my identity.
- What prompted you to set up your studio in the current location away from Paris?
It's mainly because I wanted to live in a place where nature is right nearby, not just only for work. Even when I lived in Paris, I would walk in the Bois de Boulogne almost every day, and I always felt that nature had a positive influence on me. Also, pottery requires space for materials like clay and stock, and I felt it was difficult to immerse myself in production in Paris. When I first rented a house in Burgundy, I got a dog (Sane, who is now 2 years old), and various encounters led me to the current location.
- Does the environment, region, and lifestyle influence your work?
I believe that nature doesn't directly inspire my work, but a good environment certainly motivates my creation, making life richer. I go hiking in the nearby forest every week, and sometimes I see horses coming to drink from the fountain through the big window of the studio. The energy of nature and the current environment may have an indirect influence on my work as a byproduct.
- What kind of creative activities would you like to pursue in the future?
I don't know what will happen in five years, but... I want to develop variations of plates. I'm currently working on prototypes. (She was showing me a sketchbook filled with many ideas) I take photos of things I find while walking and develop them internally. I'm also working on a project for new products, but I'm still considering whether to develop it as INI CERAMIQUE or explore other approaches.

With her natural demeanor and overflowing ideas, and firmly grounded at the same time, I couldn't help but feel excited about her future direction. At the event in Japan, I wish people will touch and savor the texture and expression of each piece carefully crafted and drawn by her hand.
INI CERAMIQUE profile
INI CERAMIQUEはデザイナーのInhee Maによって設立されたフランスを拠点とするハンドメイドのセラミックスタジオです。彼女の作品は、装飾的な花瓶、ティーポット、カップ、ボウル、皿など。
ミニマルで侘び寂びの美学に基づいたコレクションは、クラフトマンシップ・アートと自然との間での対話を生み出してくれます。韓国出身のInhee Maはモンペリエの高等美術学校（Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier）を卒業後に、複合的に現代アート、デザイン、工芸を組み合わせた制作活動を始めました。INI CERAMIQUEのコレクションもまた、審美的なインスピレーションと日用品としての機能性との関係から生みだされています。 作品の全ては、工房でデザイナー自身の手作業によって生み出されています。粘土はシャモットストーンウェアを使用し高温で焼成され、内側は光沢のある透明な釉薬、外側の自然な土の質感といったコントラストが特徴です。
INI CERAMIQUE is a handmade ceramics studio based in France, founded by our designer, Inhee Ma. Her ceramics work aims to create decorative pieces, such as vases, teapots, cups, bowls or plates. Through the development of collections built around a minimalist wabi sabi aesthetic, her creations generate a dialogue between craftsmanship, art and nature. Graduated from the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, Inhee Ma is from South Korea and is developing a multidisciplinary activity, combining contemporary art, design and crafts. The INI CERAMIQUE collections emerge from the association between aesthetic inspiration and the functionality of everyday objects. All INI CERAMIQUE pieces are handcrafted by the designer, in her workshop. In chamotte stoneware, they are then fired at high temperature and present a contrast between a shiny transparent glazed interior and a raw exterior emphasizing the natural texture of the clay.
